Crime happens everywhere. However, you can deter criminals from breaking into your home by installing outdoor security lighting. There are a few things to keep in mind when doing so.

Decide on the Type of Light Bulb

You can choose from a wide variety of outdoor light bulbs. The best type to use is LED floodlight bulbs rated at 4,000 Kelvin. These provide powerful illumination while using little electricity. They’re also dependable and can last for over 20 years. You should avoid solar lights. They often won’t work when it’s overcast and fail to turn on in the night. While they seem fine in concept, in the real world they’re lacking.

Where to Install Outdoor Security Lighting

You want to install outdoor security lighting in high-risk areas around your home. These are typically the front and backyards. Each exterior doorway should have a security light as should ground-level windows.

You should have a light for your driveway, especially if you leave cars parked in it. Some people install perimeter lights around their backyard so they’ll know when someone’s entered their property but haven’t reached the house yet.

It's On Electrical, LLC of Ambler, PA, installs outdoor security lighting. We work with many brands such as Kichler, Cummins, Siemens, and Generac.

What Height Should the Outdoor Security Lights Be?

You need to have the lights high enough so that they can’t be tampered with. This means not just out of arm’s reach but where they can’t be reached with a stick or broom. They should be at least eight feet off the ground and up to 20-feet high.

At these heights, the motion controls will still detect movement below them. Most motion detectors can sense movement up to 25 feet away.
